The Motherhood Village Podcast

Dec 10, 2021

Casey McGovern is the founder of the McGovern Foundation, Inc. A non-profit organization, located in South Florida, that focuses on drowning prevention education and bereavement services. Casey brings a unique perspective to the work she does; being a mother of a drowning victim herself, her daughter, Edna Mae passed away after a drowning incident in their backyard pool.

Casey immediately knew she needed to help other families never experience the same heartache as her family did. So, she plugged herself into the community educating caregivers all over the South Florida area. And in 2014, she accepted a position with the Florida Department of Health as the Drowning Prevention Program Manager; where she spent the last 7 years leading all efforts related to drowning prevention. However, Casey felt a nudge on her heart to go back to her roots, and this past summer dove back into working for her family's non-profit organization, the McGovern Foundation. She felt she needed to do more, and not be limited by the bureaucracy of governmental work.

Her goal is to reach the entire State with the education that is so desperately needed. Drowning is the number 1 cause of unintentional death for children 1 to 4 years of age, and although it may be difficult to hear that, there is so much more that can be done to change those statistics.

Cassie bravely and openly shares her story of being a parent of a drowning victim, and how she relied on her faith to gain the strength to move forward & help others after Em passed away. We discuss the surprising risk factors, statistics, myths, and preventable measures that can be taken, as well as the services the McGovern Foundation provides, the misconceptions of secondary drowning, and so much more!
